Yin-Yang in Landscape Architecture – Ventura, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, and Carpinteria Landscape Design
Yin-Yang is something that is often discussed in design, but whose true meaning is little understood. Yin-Yang literally means “shadow-light”. It is easy to misunderstand this meaning and assume that since shadow and light are opposites, they are opposing forces that must be balanced through careful design; this is not the case, but rather shadow and light are complimentary forces.
Take for example the landscape. Broken down into its most basic elements, it’s made up of hardscape and softscape. Hardscape consists of impermeable surfaces such as rock and concrete, while softscape consists of soil and plants. Excellent landscape design balances these elements in a way that helps them compliment each other in order to seamlessly tie the ‘natural’ environment into the ‘man-made’ one. While hardscape is all about brick, mortar, and handsome stone, it is softscaping that infuses poetry in the landscaping design with its ever-changing and ephemeral state of growth and movement.
Our landscape architectural design team is trained and experienced in seeing the Yin-Yang relationship in all aspects of the landscape. Let us help you design a truly meaningful space.
