13 Trick or Treat Safety Tips: Spooky Landscapes in Ventura, Camarillo, Carpinteria, Thousand Oaks Landscape Design, landscaping

It’s that time of year again; Halloween time! Get ready for spooky costumes, tons of candy, and a great walk around the neighborhood. It can be a fun time, but safety is key. Here’s 13 tips to keep your kids happy, healthy, and safe.

  1. Adult Supervision: If your kids aren’t old enough to trick-or-treat on their own then accompany them.
  2. Safety in Numbers: If your kids aren’t accompanied by an adult, have them go in a group and have them stay in an area with other groups of trick or treaters.
  3. Map It Out: Before you set foot out the door, designate a route and stick to it.
  4. Tick-or-Treat-Friendly Homes: Ensure your kids only visit houses with lights on. And, you might also suggest the houses they visit have some sort of Halloween decoration on the porch.
  5. Stay Outside: Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s house. They can get their candy from the porch.
  6. Be Visible: Dress your kids in a bright costume so others can see them. If their costume is dark, incorporate reflective strips or carry a glow stick or flashlight.
  7. Smart & Spooky: Ensure your kids’ costumes aren’t a hazard. They shouldn’t be so long that they can trip over them, and avoid masks that can block their field of vision.
  8. Quality Control: Check your kids’ candy before they eat it. Any candy that isn’t in a sealed wrapper or has obviously been tamped with is a BIG NO.
  9. Say “No” to Strangers: Tell your kids to never accept a ride or go anywhere with a stranger.
  10. Obey the Law: Encourage your kids to follow all the regular rules for walking around. That includes looking both ways before crossing, obeying all traffic laws and using cross walks and crossing lights where available.
  11. Landscaping that Spooks: Avoid landscape areas that are overgrown or dark. Tell your kids to stay in well lit areas.
  12. Smart Phone Anyone?: In case of emergency, keep your phone on you. If your kids are going unsupervised, make sure they have a phone on them. Also, smart phones are handy to have in neighborhoods that you’re not familiar with. That way you won’t get lost, say if you’re walking in Thousand Oaks and you’re from Ventura.
  13. Finally, have a great time! Make sure your kids have tons of fun, get lots and lots of candy, and before they get home from school have a few pieces for yourself. 😉
